Thingyan 2013 in Mandalay, Myanmar

The Thingyan water festival is held every April in Myanmar to celebrate Buddhist new year. For three to four days, revellers pour or throw water on one another to symbolically wash away the sins of the previous year.

This year, I was lucky enough to experience Thingyan mayhem in its full force in the historic city of Mandalay, where I spent days on end wet from head to toe. Despite the 40-degree heat, each evening I returned to my hotel room to soak in a long, hot bath.
